Control, Consequences, and Communication

Talking fixes things. Usually. But we have to accept talking is a form of control, allowing us to alter the perceptions of those around us. It doesn't matter whether it's fact or fiction.

Talking is great, with people who listen. Otherwise, it's a waste of time. Do you increase fees to make up the shortfall on the existing invoice? Charge separately? Have a chat? Ignore? Charge new value accordingly?

Now, there is a difference between failing to listen and listening but disagreeing.

Failing to listen can be innocent. We can be busy, and that's actually a good sign—we want everyone to succeed in all areas of their lives—it's healthy!

An inability to listen is a failure in communication. A responsibility that rests on all parties involved. It can stem from a lack of respect, in the same way it can occur from a need to control. A leadership killer. You don't trust the people around you to lead their work?

So, if talk is cheap, what else can we do?
